Following a string of impressive bookings in 2015, Déjà vu tossed up yet another invitation at Funktion, the Hot Creations ‘Newcomer DJ of the year 2014’ Patrick Topping. As the title suggests 2014 was an amazingly successful year for the Geordie, with three number ones in Beatport’s Tech-house chart and a residency at DC10 accompanying the accolade of being ranked #80 in Resident Advisor’s Top 100 DJs 2014.
As expected with a booking of this magnitude and the faithful Hull crowd, Funktion was rammed full of beat hungry house heads, making use of the extra space created by the removal of the VIP areas. Throughout Topping’s set he kept the energy at peak levels, throwing down big, dynamic basslines which saw the crowd respond with raucous appreciation. His transitioning and build up was smooth, creating tension before every big breakdown, setting a platform for his own renowned productions such as last summer’s ‘Track of the Season’ 'Forget', which was met with the biggest cheer of the night.
Topping’s set grew progressively harder by including tracks by the likes of Robert Hood, emphasising his versatility in style whilst showcasing his love of techno. Following on from Topping were local boys Corey Barker and the ever impressive Lee Jeffrey, who played out some of his own productions which seem to be garnering more and more support from Funktion crowds. Their set continued the high-octane energy which Topping had engineered, with increasingly pacier mixes leaving the crowd besotted with the floor until closing time.
Next on the Déjà vu bill is Hot Creations’ Jay Kurmis and local lad wAFF, who returns to his Hull roots before a huge summer in Ibiza, catch it on the 3rd of May.
