Bump celebrated its first birthday in style, with a bumper line up seeing reknowned French selector Phil Weeks and Italian duo The Di Chiara Brother’s both turning the tables down at Hull’s new home of house, Funktion.

Albeit a relatively small turnout, those who did turn out brought an appetite for the floor, engineering an atmosphere which overshadowed the emptiness. Bump resident Mike White opened up things with some smooth bass-heavy hits, laying the gauntlet down for the Italians to get the crowd back from the bar.

It was clear to see why the Di Chiara Brother’s have recently emerged on the house scene, with a fluid coherence on the decks, their thumping tech-house set matched their enthusiasm on stage, seeing the crowd bouncing throughout their two hour slot. Their performance and evident passion for house music makes for a promising future for the two, with productions already released on Roush Recordings.

Phil Weeks followed up the brothers and lived up to his billing as a true house music purist. With three hours of heavy hitting bass lines littered with some old skool Chicago sound, the floor was pumping, every drop being met with cheers from the large French contingent. His flare and energy coupled with the effective lighting system filled Funktion with an electric atmosphere, making it clear to see why his label, Robosoul Recordings, has achieved huge success with such an enigmatic and enthusiastic figurehead.

Resident Tom Gibbins closed the night off with a hardline set of mean bass and tech-house, capping the night off perfectly.
