Different Language Halloweens are like few other parties. Hull's resident rave populace don the contentious and extravagant fancy dress outfits and are ceaselessly treated to exciting and progressive Djs. For the second outing of the newly developed Gate No.5 venue - which lends itself perfectly to hosting an event such as Different Language, epitomising the underground vibe which makes a home for both house and techno music in Hull - the attendees bore witness to Berghain resident Dana Rush and Othertones founder Dan Lively.
For anyone who doubted the venue after the first event in summer, it is safe to say they won’t be left with any doubts anymore, after what was a truly intense and electric night, with local support from none other than Different Language offsetting the crowd perfectly with a heavily bass-lined layer of sound. The hosts then gave way to Dan Lively’s progressively aggressive bass lines, providing an energetic atmosphere among the floor goers, aptly building the excitement for Berliner Ruh to step up.
The derelict, dark, and somewhat intimidating environment of Gate No.5 allows for a certain comparison to some of the small Berlin clubs, where the run down setting dubbed with smoke and red lighting fitted perfectly with the minimalist techno main girl Dana Ruh treated the sell-out crowd to, some even said its Hull’s very own version of the Berghain(ish)
Dark brooding builders supported by seductive bass lines were mixed in with effective instrumentals, a highlight being the Lil Louis and The World track ‘I Called U’, bringing old skool Chicago house to the Gate. A combination of both house classics and her recognisable minimalist techno saw the crowd pumping in an amazing amalgamation of outfits from Honey Monsters to Pistorius.
Gate No.5 is certainly a perfect fit for Different Language, unquestionably a new home for Hull’s growing underground music scene, carving its name as a more than respectable venue on the North’s rave map.
An impressive night all round, and credit to those who made it happen.
